Solution

Balanced chemical equation:

A chemical equation in which the numbers of atoms of each element on both the sides of the equation is equal is called balanced equation.

Step 1 : Representation of the chemical reaction

Al2O3 + H2SO4 Al2(SO4)3 + H2O

Step 2 : Calculating the number of atoms on both side of reaction

ElementsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Al22
H22
O713
S13

Step 3: Balancing the uneven numbers of atoms on both the side of reaction

  1. as the number of aluminum and hydrogen atoms is equal but number of oxygen and Sulphur atoms are unequal. So balancing these can be done by multiplying the required coefficient for them in the reaction.
  2. to make atoms equal, on reactant side ‘ 3 ’ will be multiplied with Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) and on product side ‘ 3 ’ will be multiplied with water(H20).

i.e.

Al2O3 + 3H2SO4 Al2(SO4)3 + 3H2O

ElementsNumber of atoms on reactant sideNumber of atoms on product side
Al22
H22
O1515
S33

Hence, the equation is balanced.

Al2O3 (s) + 3H2SO4(aq) Al2(SO4)3 (aq) + 3H2O (l)

Aluminum oxide Sulfuric acid Aluminum sulfate Water.
